Stating that the GNOME Project is proud to announce the availability of GNOME 42.rc, Jardón said; reminding that it should not be forgotten that this is a test version and should be used for testing purposes only, he asked the testers to report the errors they detected. Noting that he recommends the user to enjoy this test version as quickly as possible, Jardón said; He said the final version is scheduled to be released this week. Jardón said that no changes can be made to the source code due to code freezing; stated that the translation and documentation work
could continue without the approval of the publishing team.

:: More ::

The new Linux desktop Gnome 42 , which will follow Gnome 41 on March 23 and already comes with numerous applications based on the free GUI toolkit GTK in version 4, can now be tried out with the first release candidate. There are numerous optical and technical innovations to be discovered.

Even the release candidate is too late
After the first beta was slightly delayed, the developers wanted to release the first release candidate of the free desktop on March 5th before the final version of Gnome 42 is due to appear on March 23rd. But the first preview has also been postponed by a few days and is therefore only now available for download via the official project sources .

On the other hand, the developers want to hold on to the release of Gnome 42 on March 23, as the Gnome project has recently assured several times.

New GTK 4 apps for Gnome 42
GTK 4 is implemented using the Libadwaita 1.0 library and already includes the following apps in the recently published Gnome 42 Release Candidate:

New GTK 4 tool in Gnome 42
Gnome calls
Gnome bluetooth
Gnome Calculator
Gnome Disk Utility
Gnome Clocks
Gnome Maps
nautilus
For the first time with Gnome 42 Beta , which was released on February 22nd, the new screenshot and screencast function made its way into the free desktop and replaced the old screenshot tool. In addition, a completely revised and more user-friendly OSD ("On-Screen-Display") provides information about the volume and display brightness of the system.

The command line console replaces the Gnome Terminal and the text editor will in future take the place of the UTF-8 compatible free text editor gedit , while the handling of resources such as the main memory is said to have been significantly optimized.

A consistent appearance
In addition to porting the GTK 4 apps, the developers have also focused in particular on the appearance of the open desktop for Linux, BSD, Unix and Unix-like systems. For the first time ever, Gnome offers a system-wide light and dark appearance, as well as numerous new features designed to make the overall desktop look even more consistent.

Both topics can be applied permanently or used by means of a configurable day/night plan. If desired, automatic synchronization of the background image is also provided.

The new accent colors are intended to better highlight important buttons on the desktop, while Gnome 42 is intended to be darker than Gnome 41 overall.
