5th Grade Math 1.5, Multiplication Patterns, Powers of 10, and Mental Math

We can use a basic fact and a pattern to multiply by a multi-digit number. Patterns help us predict what comes next. We can start with a basic fact, then write more equations with additional zeros in the factors until we find the product of the original problem. Using exponents and multiplication makes it easier to count the zeros and write zeros in the product. We can solve an equation using mental math by finding the product of the basic fact with additional zeros. We use the Commutative and Associative Properties to rearrange an equation. The product of any whole number factor and 10 will always have at least one zero because 10 has one zero. The product of any whole number factor and 100 will always have at least two zeros because 100 has two zeros. Be careful to include all the zeros from all of the factors. In some real-world situations, such as in science or engineering, numbers may be expressed using powers of 10 when the numbers are very large or very small. We use Mental Math and basic facts to complete a table for powers of 10. We solve a word problem that involves higher order thinking skills and multiples.
