“There is a huge shortage of registered surveyors in Fiji”.
This was highlighted by the Minister for Industry, Trade, Tourism, Lands and Mineral Resources Hon. Faiyaz Siddiq Koya today while he presented certificates to three newly registered land surveyors at the Ministry of Lands Conference Room, GCC Building, Nasese.
The new surveyors include Mr. Kemueli Masikerei from Department of Lands, Mr. Mosese Vatubuli from the Housing Authority and Mr. Teroni Williame from Ministry of WaterWays.
Currently there are thirty five registered surveyors in the country and only four registered surveyors are employed within the Ministry itself,” Hon. Koya added. He says that this will tremendously ease the vacuum on the shortage.
Hon. Koya highlighted that a recent survey indicates that 90 percent of these surveyors are over the age of fifty five which symbolizes that in the next ten years there will be fewer surveyors.
He says to address this issue, as part of the strategy the Ministry is taking a determined approach in its efforts to have more Registered Surveyors commencing with this three.
To become a Registered Surveyor, the Ministry has given 6 months period for trainee surveyors to complete their projects as the requirement for registration with about 10 more candidates that are in the process of becoming registered with more to follow suit.
Moreover, 2 Survey technicians had been awarded overseas scholarships 1 in Hong Kong and 1 in Australia and another had just graduated from Hong Kong this year.
