Style adaptation is of paramount importance to every guitarist playing, even from the most unlikely of sources. Throughout the years I was never a self-proclaimed fan of The Who, but always admired and appreciated Pete Townshend and his playing (and writing). Townshend was full of swagger, able to create a ton of energy through his aggressive playing and strumming style. In my play, I love to write riffs that take full advantage of the use of chords; which immediately moves us away from the convenience and comfort of power chords. Townshend, for example, is known for his heavy use of Suspended Chords, which are ideal for suppling movement or melody on top of our rhythmic aggression. Taking a brief look into The Who's classic 'Pinball Wizard,' sheds a bright light on everything I love about Townshend's playing. We will follow with our own journey into composition, and I'll show you how I've incorporated and adapted his lessons into my own style.
