Max Stoiber is a Staff Software Engineer at Gatsby. He introduced and demoed Gatsby Admin (currently in alpha), which aims to be a hub for features like Themes, Blocks, Recipes, and GraphiQL.

Our vision is that everyone should be able to create websites and essentially write code without writing code. Gatsby should be for everyone, not just coders. Unlike the products of site builders like Wix and Squarespace, sites should be extensible and built with modern code. Game development already provides a precedent for this—Unreal Engine has visual editors for logic and even UI, which is exactly what web programming needs.

Gatsby Themes provide shared visuals and functionality. Blocks (currently in alpha) is a visual editor for React apps, where dragging and dropping components will edit the underlying JSX. Recipes allow you to manage your frontend infrastructure—linters, libraries—automatically. Backend infrastructure tools like Terraform exist—why should developers, especially beginners, have to manually set up, for example, Typescript? GraphiQL is like a visual editor for data and will be moving to the Monaco Editor, which powers VS Code. Using Monaco will unlock features like automatic fragments, peek definitions, command palettes, and context menus. The goal of Gatsby Admin is to be the hub for all these tools aimed at empowering users to code without writing code. Everything that’s possible in `gatsby-config.js` should be possible & compatible with Admin.
