In covid-19 crime news from El Salvador the gangs are reportedly taking advantage of security forces helping to contain COVID-19 in the country. As a result there is a spike in gang violence.. There were 24 murders on just one day last week and then 29 murders in one day, just two days later. Authorities said most of the gang-related killings are ordered from prisons.

So the president has authorized lethal force to control it. Apparently prison officials are packing rival gang members together in cells. That lethal force is authorized in self-defense or in defense of the lives of Salvadorans.



And that’s not all, the government is also putting rival gangs in shared cells to try and break up the lines of comunication between members of the same group.

There is a 24-hour prison lockdown and maximum emergency has been declared. If you are in prison right now in El Salvador you will receive no sunlight, and will be in total confinement for 24 hours a day in the seven maximum security prisons in the country.



There are about 12,862 gang members behind bars in El Salvador. Nationwide, gangs in El Salvador are made up of more than 65,000 youth and adults, with most members reportedly a part of MS-13.

Before the recent escalation of violence, the country reported a drop in killings with an average of 2.3 violent deaths per day. As of Monday, there were 323 cases of COVID-19 in El Salvador with at least eight deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.
