A fundraiser to benefit Mass Poetry, Evening of Inspired Leaders speaks powerfully and directly to our moment in time. At this free event, leaders on the front lines shared the poems that have inspired and sustained them through these challenging months and years. Inspired by Robert Pinsky’s Favorite Poem Project, each poem is meaningful to the speaker and has had an influence on their life and work. Evening of Inspired Leaders is an annual event where we come together for inspiration, for poetry that speaks to our hearts, to our spirits, and to this moment, in all its complexity.
Whether you missed it or just want to watch it again, view 2020’s Evening of Inspired Leaders on our YouTube channel, where you can revisit musical performances by Rosanne Cash and Yo-Yo Ma, hear stunning original poetry from poet & teaching artist Febo, who has been a longtime partner and poet-in-residence with Mass Poetry, and student speaker Sharon Castang, who worked with one of our own poets-in-residence for two years. Special thanks to our collaborator and production partner Loop Lab.
The all-star cast of Evening of Inspired Leaders included CEO of WBUR Margaret Low, and Boston City Councilor Julia Mejia, who won her position by a single vote, and read a poem by Boston's first-ever Youth Poet Laureate, Alondra Bobadilla. These leaders shared what poems inspired and sustained them. Gladys Vega, Executive Director at Chelsea Collaborative, spoke about her work on the front lines of the Covid-19 pandemic in Chelsea, and the role poetry has in her life. Dr. Anne Klibanski, President and CEO of Mass General Brigham read poetry by W.B. Yeats, and drew parallels between the world today and over a century ago.
The other amazing speakers at the event, with equally stunning poetry and wisdom to share, were poet & educator Regie Gibson; Vikiana Petit-Homme, former Northeast regional organizer at March for Our Lives; Darrell Jones, Strongest Link community activist; Michelle Quirk, MGH Nurse Practitioner; David Waters, CEO of Community Servings; and of course, our stunning emcee, Meghna Chakrabarti, host of WBUR’s On Point.
