REALLY Attract Cardinals: Create an Irresistible Cardinal Haven

Attracting Cardinals is not very hard to do, but we take it a step further. Rather than simply attracting cardinals with the right birdseed, feeders and some fresh water, Katharine also explains ways to turn your yard into an irresistible spot for resident cardinals that will keep them coming back year after year.

Please note that a Cardinal's range is east of the Rocky Mountains. For those of you living west of the Rocky Mountains, or right at the Rocky Mountains in places of higher altitude, you likely WON'T attract any cardinals because they do not live in this area.

We have found more squirrel intrusion with this feeder due to its smaller size; however, squirrels really can't drain it dry that easily.

Brome Squirrel Buster Feeder Squirrel-Proof Bird Feeder https://amzn.to/4beU2nk - Another favorite feeders for general bird feeding. Some drawbacks is that it is a little harder for cardinals to use, but they can use it. the other drawback is the amount of seed it contains is not as much so we end up refilling it every day.

Woodlink Going Green Large Premiere Bird Feeder https://amzn.to/3UAPX5S This is not a squirrel-resistant feeder, but it is an excellent cardinal feeder with a decent capacity. Plus, the two suet cages allow woodpeckers, titmice and other birds to use it.

Woodlink Going Green Platform Feeder GGPLAT Model https://amzn.to/3QNeWSn We absolutely love platform feeders for cardinals. This is a modest sized feeder, but it will allow your cardinals plenty of room to feed alongside other birds.

DutchCrafters Free-Standing Platform feeder https://amzn.to/3UJ2iVB We love free standing platform feeders. Sometimes we put them under a hanging feeder to catch the stuff that falls below. We have always had cardinals use these platform feeders along with house finches, Goldfinches, titmice, carolina wrens and chickadees. This is also ESPECIALLY HELPFUL for groundfeeding birds like your juncos, white-throated sparrows and mourning doves. Not Squirrel Resistant.

CARDINAL BLEND SEED
Don't be fooled by seed blends that say they're for cardinals. Look to see what's in them first. Here are our recommendations to save you the work.

It's straight black oil sunflower and safflower seed. This will bring your cardinals, titmice and chickadees.

This is a good all-around mix with no filler. Not only does it have black oil sunflower seed and safflower seed, but also nut blends and fruits that may bring in a wider variety of birds.
