Tour Description:
Part 1 of our Musée d’Orsay tour starts with a history of the building itself and an explanation of the Paris Salon and Academic Art. Next, we examine Ingres’ La Source, followed by Delacroix’s Lion Hunt sketches. We meander over to Millet’s iconic The Gleaners, and then investigate Courbet’s influential A Burial at Ornans.

Then it’s on to Manet’s seriously controversial Olympia to talk about nakedness vs nudity, and we admire Carpeaux’s similarly controversial sculpture, La Danse. Part 1 concludes with Monet’s Women in the Garden, a pre-impressionist piece that shows us where his style is heading.
