Russia Unveils Su-57’s Advanced AL-51F1 Engine & New Helmet Mounted Targeting System

Russia's fifth-generation Su-57 fighter jet has taken a significant leap forward with two groundbreaking upgrades: the introduction of the AL-51F1 engine and an advanced helmet-mounted targeting system.

The new AL-51F1 engine, also known as "Product 30," boosts the Su-57’s capabilities to fully meet fifth-generation fighter requirements. This second-stage engine enables higher thrust, improved thrust-to-weight ratio, and enhanced supersonic cruising without afterburners. With a nominal thrust of 11,000 kgf and 17,000 kgf on afterburner, the AL-51F1 significantly outperforms its predecessor, the AL-41F1, transforming the Su-57 into a formidable multirole stealth fighter. Starting in 2024, all Su-57s will feature this powerful propulsion system, ensuring superior performance in aerial combat and stealth missions.

In parallel, the Su-57 is being equipped with a cutting-edge helmet-mounted targeting system designed to project real-time flight and mission-critical data directly onto the pilot's visor. This innovative system enhances situational awareness and targeting precision, providing a competitive edge in combat scenarios. However, comparisons with the F-35’s Gen III helmet reveal gaps in materials, integration, and overall sophistication. While the F-35’s custom-fitted carbon-fiber helmet features a Distributed Aperture System (DAS) for unparalleled situational awareness, the Su-57’s thermoplastic helmet represents a cost-effective alternative with room for improvement.

These upgrades mark a major milestone in Russia’s efforts to advance the Su-57 as a leading fifth-generation fighter. Catch a glimpse of these innovations in the trailer for Masters of the Sky, a film celebrating the 85th anniversary of the Sukhoi Design Bureau, which will feature the Su-57 with its new AL-51F1 engines and advanced systems.

Stay tuned for more updates on Russia’s strides in aviation technology and the evolving capabilities of the Su-57.
