Easy steps to setting up a DIY vermi composting bin.

Get two buckets and stack on top of each other. You can reuse old buckets or any other container you have at home. Ensure that there are holes on the top of the bucket to receive some air and at the bottom of the top bucket for excess liquid.

Prepare the bedding. Add coco peat, shredded newspaper, cardboard as a bedding.  Make sure bedding is fluffy (not packed down) to provide air for the worms.

Add the worms. Before adding the worms, find out how many worms you are starting with. Depending on the amount of food you will be feeding you have to add the number of worms.  The safe way is to start with 1000 worms.
Once you add worms wait for couple of days to let the worms settle in the new environment.

Add food scraps to the bin. Lift up bedding, add food scraps, then cover food with bedding. You can feed fruit and vegetable scraps that would normally be thrown away, such as peels, rinds, cores, etc.
Do not put meats, bones, oily and spicy food or dairy products.

Place a sheet of newspaper, hessian or cotton towel on top of the bedding. This will help maintain the moisture balance and help prevent fruit flies in the bin. 

Cover the bin with the lid. Choose an appropriate spot for the bin.
 To keep worms happy, feed them about once or twice a week. If bedding dries up, spray some water. If bedding gets too wet add some  shredded newspaper or cardboard.
Once the tray is full, you can add another tray and repeat the whole process. Wait for a couple of weeks for the casting to be prepared in the tray one. Once the casting is ready to be harvested. Take the tray one out and harvest the casting.
Store for a week or two and it is ready to be used in your garden.
