Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra has once again created a political stir. Speaking on the issue of illegal infiltration on India’s eastern border, she made a highly controversial statement against Union Home Minister Amit Shah, which sparked widespread criticism. Moitra said that Amit Shah’s “head should be chopped off and put on the table,” a remark that has shaken the political landscape.

Addressing concerns about alleged infiltration from Bangladesh, Moitra strongly criticized the central government’s border security policies during a public event. She said:

“I am asking, if there is no one to protect our borders and people from other nations are entering India in lakhs and crores…if they are eyeing our mothers and sisters…if they are taking over our land…then first, Amit Shah’s head must be chopped off and put on the table.”

Her comments drew sharp reactions from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other political parties. BJP leaders called the statement violent, unconstitutional, and criminal for a minister, describing it as “unparliamentary,” “dangerous,” and “an insult to the dignity of public representation.”

Moitra made these remarks in the context of alleged illegal infiltration from Bangladesh and the security challenges it poses in border areas like West Bengal. She blamed the central government for the situation, calling it a “security failure.” She added:

“The Home Ministry and the Home Minister cannot protect the borders of this country…The Prime Minister himself is saying that people from outside are coming here and preying on our mothers and sisters.”

This controversy comes at a time when the central government is implementing ‘Operation Pushback’, aimed at identifying and expelling Rohingya and illegal Bangladeshi citizens living in India.

Despite these efforts, Mahua Moitra said illegal infiltration continues to be a serious problem. She claimed that although agencies are present at the borders, locals are not receiving any real security benefits. She also said:

“BSF is here. What is BSF doing? We (natives) remain fearful of the BSF. We do not see anyone infiltrating here.”

The BSF, which functions under the Union Home Ministry, has not officially responded to her remarks. Some ministry officials, however, described her comments as “politically motivated” and “far from ground reality.”

Meanwhile, the BJP is planning to raise this issue in Parliament and may file a complaint under various sections of the IPC for threatening the Home Minister and inciting violence. Sources in the Home Ministry called Moitra’s statement a “direct violation of democratic values and national interests.”

The TMC leadership has not yet officially responded to this controversy. According to party insiders, there is some discomfort within the party over her sharp language, even though Moitra continues to criticize BJP policies.

This incident further reinforces Mahua Moitra’s reputation as a vocal and outspoken leader who does not hesitate to cross the usual limits of political decorum. However, following this statement, the possibility of legal action or a censure motion in Parliament cannot be ruled out.
