In the heart of Samegrelo, in the Senaki municipality, lies the intriguing Nokalakevi fortress, a place steeped in ancient history. It was once the capital of the Lazican Kingdom, possibly visited by the Argonauts themselves. The name "Nokalakevi" translates to "the place where something was" in Megrelian. The exact origin and early inhabitants of this city remain shrouded in mystery.

In the early 6th century, during the Great Lazic War, Nokalakevi was seized by the Persians, marking a turning point in its history. Over time, the city was abandoned, and by 735 A.D., it was razed to the ground.

Since 2016, Nokalakevi has been under reconstruction and is open to tourists. You can explore the ruins, including the fortress, temple, tower, and remnants of city walls. The Archaeological Museum, near the entrance, houses artifacts discovered during excavations.

Venture to the free section of Nokalakevi, accessible by small goat paths, where less-explored ruins still remain.

Across the Tekhuri River, you'll find the Nokalakevi hot springs, offering rejuvenating thermal waters. To reach them, cross the pedestrian bridge near the southwestern part of the fortress.

Caution: The steps to the river can be slippery.
