The difference between a normal candle and a magic candle is what happens just after you blow it out. When you blow out a normal candle, you will see a thin ribbon of smoke rise up from the wick. This is vaporized paraffin or candle wax. The wick ember you get when you blow out the candle is hot enough to vaporize the paraffin of the candle, but it is not hot enough to re-ignite it.
In a magic candle, magnesium powder is added to the candle’s wick. Magnesium is a highly reactive metal in powdered form. It can ignite at temperatures as low as 800 ºF or 430 ºC. When the flame is blown out, the hot embers from the wick ignite the magnesium powder, producing tiny sparks. This, in turn, ignites the vaporized paraffin hydrocarbons, which relights the wick. The magnesium found lower down in the wick doesn’t burn because it is protected by the paraffin. Magnesium powder is used in magic candles because it is flammable at a lower temperature than other metals such as aluminum or iron.
