WEEKEND WOGAN 10th ANNIVERSARY SERIES - Show 26/35
12.41pm, live on BBC Radio 2 on Sunday, 17 October 2010… the Joe Turner classic, ‘Shake, Rattle And Roll’.
One of the most golden 'pinch me' moments of my entire career so far… singing a duet with an idol, the one and only, Huey Lewis… live on national radio.
Like everyone of my age, 'Back To The Future' blew me away in 1985. Not only was the film incredible and remains so, there was that phenomenal soundtrack and in particular THAT song… 'The Power Of Love’! Yes, the record was ridiculously good but the SINGER!!! That VOICE!!! That voice was and will always be one of the most iconic in Rock/Pop history and by far, one of the biggest influences on me… EVER!
And so it came to pass, as fate would have it, that one day in October 2007, I would meet Huey Lewis at the Alfred Dunhill Links Golf Championship in St Andrews at a gig my band and I were booked to play at. It wasn’t just any ordinary gig either. No! Part of the deal was that Huey (along with a few of his golfing pals like Don Felder, Tico Torres, Andy Garcia and Ronan Keating) would join us on stage for an exclusive performance. And what would Huey sing with us? You guessed it… 'The Power Of Love’. However… he also asked to do ‘Shake, Rattle And Roll’ which Huey (Lewis and the News) had recorded for an album called ‘Four Chords & Several Years Ago’ which I played to death when it came out in 1994.
By the time we got to ‘Weekend Wogan’ in October 2010, Huey and I had performed together at St Andrews two more times and I’d also produced the album, ‘Like This' for Albert Lee which included a track called ‘Rad Gumbo’ for which Huey had guested on harmonica. So when Huey was booked to come onto Terry Wogan’s show, Huey and I had a conversation about what he was going to perform. He decided that he would, of course, do his biggest hit, 'The Power Of Love’ and two other songs taken from his then new album, ‘Soulsville'. Knowing that a moment like this may never happen again, I asked Huey if he would like to do a fourth song and be part of my ‘Aperitif’ and share lead vocals on ‘Shake, Rattle And Roll’. Not only did I love the way he sings it, not only did I relish the thought of singing with a hero of mine, I also had never heard the song done as a duet and I thought it would suit us. Thankfully, he loved the idea.
Having had so much of my year on ‘Weekend Wogan’ filmed so beautifully by the BBC with SO many incredible moments captured to treasure for always, I have absolutely no right to complain about the fact that the BBC were not filming by this point of the year. Still, being completely honest, it will never stop me from regretting the fact that THIS moment, with an artist that I adored as a teenager and that now had become a friend, and right up there with ‘Albert Lee Week’ as one of my favourite memories of 2010… was missed by the BBC.
So what we’ve done with this performance is synced it up to footage (taken by one of my background singers, Kirstie Roberts) the day before at the rehearsal and interspersed some of Hayley Madden’s superb photos taken as we were performing this live. A huge 'dream come true' for me and with one of the most brilliant, kindest and coolest people I’ve ever met in my life… Huey Lewis. ❤️
