Students at the Ping Chao Elementary School in flood-stricken Hubei Province are learning a tough lesson from the disaster which closed their school nearly one month ago. Families uprooted in China's worst flooding in 44 years are sending their children to makeshift schools erected in settlements which shelter tens of thousands of homeless. Schools across China opened for their first day on 1 September and children from the town of Ping Chao began their lessons on a dirt floor, under a hot plastic roof. Emergency funds from the Chinese government provide the basic books and blackboards for an estimated seven million children who are victims of this year's flooding.
