I hope this gets handlers thinking about scent in new and different ways. Because scent isn’t visible and we currently have no way to quantify it, its importance is quite often overlooked. A well-trained scent-discriminating dog is following a specific odor. For the dog, the odor is either there or it isn’t. Dogs don’t dwell on how the environment (temperature, moisture, wind, urban/rural setting, etc.) or time can affect that odor.
This is where a handler’s knowledge of odor is vital. Without help on trails, especially trails with some age on them, dogs can struggle to get to the end and make that find.
Remember, this video is attempting to predict scent—something that remains a real unknown, even in this day and age. I can’t say that the video is completely accurate in its depiction of how scent actually moved during these 28 days, but I can say that this video will help make odor more “real” and will help many handlers better understand how they can help their partners be more successful.
