People in different cities around the world spoke of the Pope's messages of peace, empathy and acceptance.

In a speech he made in 2015, two years after his election, Pope Francis set out his vision for the Catholic Church, urging it to be closer to the “abandoned, the forgotten, the imperfect” and calling on it to be “a happy church with the face of a mother, who understands, accompanies, caresses”.

Francis’s commitment to forging a more open, broad-based Catholic Church, in touch with distant dioceses, was evident in 2015 when he drew an estimated six million people to a Mass in Manila, then a million in Kinshasa, the capital of Congo, in 2023.
