"A House to Let" is a collaborative novella originally published in 1858 by Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins, Elizabeth Gaskell, and Adelaide Anne Procter in Dickens's magazine, Household Words. The story centers on an elderly woman named Sophonisba who becomes intrigued by signs of life in a supposedly vacant property across from her new home in London. Disturbed by this anomaly, she enlists the help of her elderly admirer, Jabez Jarber, and her manservant, Trottle, to investigate the mystery of the derelict house. Each author contributes a chapter that explores different aspects of the investigation and reveals the stories of past occupants, gradually building up to the mystery's resolution. This was the first collaborative work involving all four writers, who would later reteam for another project, "The Haunted House" in 1859.
