This compact Scottish city is perfect for exploration by foot. Inverness is known as Scotland’s ‘Highland Capital’, it still however retains its market town feel, dating back to its early development.
Its Old Town features 19th-century Inverness Cathedral, the mostly 18th-century Old High Church and an indoor Victorian Market selling food, clothing and crafts. The contemporary Inverness Museum and Art Gallery traces local and Highland history.


If you start from Inverness Castle and follow the Great Glen Way footpath signs along Ness Bank you will pass the Inverness War Memorial, located in a small public garden dedicated to Edith Cavell, the WWI nurse who was executed for helping Allied servicemen to escape from occupied Europe.
