Hi everyone, it's Evangeline here at etrailer. And today we'll be taking a look at our etrailer J-Style Kayak Carrier right here on our 2020 Ford Edge. So you have your Ford Edge and you're ready for adventure. You wanna go kayaking. You wanna bring your boat, what you first need is a kayak carrier as well as a roof rack. So if you have a roof rack and you want a kayak carrier, this is a compact kayak carrier, it's J-style.
So that means you can bring your kayak over to one side, freeing up some space on your roof for another kayak or more gear. So this is an affordable as well as easy to use kayak carrier. So if you wanna carry around multiple kayaks, this is the way I would go. Just because at its price point, it's a lot easier to get 2 of them for your Ford Edge. Now, we do have some features here that are relatively easy to use when it comes to the clamping system, as well as the levers.
But if you want something even easier to use, maybe check out the Yakima JayLow, it's at a slightly more premium price, but it has clamps that go around your crossbars, if that's what you're interested in. So this has a weight capacity of 150 pounds for your kayaks. As a J-style kayak carrier as well, you can adjust it for even your larger kayaks, just be mindful of the length, just so that it fits on your Ford Edge. So we'll take a look at this kayak carrier, just to see how it fits on our roof rack and the clearance with our Ford Edge, just to see if it's the right fit for you, your kayaks and your vehicle. So this includes a full strap kit which is awesome 'cause I actually use the straps for other things too when I'm not carrying around my kayaks.
So we have your bow and stern straps. They connect to that down, that goes into your Ford Edge's hood as well as your Ford Edge's hatch. Now, with those tied down, you also have your cam buckle straps for the center of your kayak. That's really cinching your kayak down to the carrier. Notice how I have it around the back of the carrier, then over the front of the kayak and then into our, or around our crossbars.
So this is my ideal fit I would say for when you want to cinch down your kayaks. One thing to be mindful of, depending on the length of your kayak is if you still have hatch clearance. So with our straps on then of course, you can see how we are still able to open up our hatch and access our trunk even with our kayak on. Definitely something worth considering, especially if you have the longer kayaks. Just make your measurements from your crossbar to the end of your hatch. What I like too is that we do have our cam buckles, but they also have a sleeve around them. So notice how it's resting right on our kayak. This is to help prevent extra scuffs and scratches during transport as well if you have any movement, you wanna make sure everything's protected. We also have this extra strap, basically a strap. So let's take this off, so we can take a closer look at the carrier itself. Now with it folded down like this, it's a lot more compact and takes up a lot less space. So we'll take some measurements just to see like the height added to the top of our roof. So measuring for, from the glass roof to this tallest point at the end, it sits at about 10 inches of height. Now, can you open your glass roof with it on, as you can see, we have plenty of space between the top of our roof and the bottom of our clamps. So we still definitely have enough clearance there. So with the kayak off, we can now look at the details on the arms as well as on the saddle. So we have these aluminum arms that stick up. You can adjust the height you want for your J-style. So if you have a larger kayak, you can bring it down a little bit more. You also have these foam pads on them. So that's gonna help support your hull and help prevent scuffs and scratches. At the center of the saddle, you also have some padding and this is not foam, but rather a rubberized material that flexes, which will help out with getting a better fit on your kayak's hull and underneath it, we have the rubberized clamps. So this fits the majority of your crossbar styles. Whether you have aero or factory crossbars, or even what we have here, which is the Inno Aero Crossbars. This fits around and keeps it nice and sturdy. Notice how we don't really have any movement and it's not sliding on your crossbar. And when you're strapping down y
