Bandleader, composer, and pianist Charley Straight was already pretty well known when his orchestra of the Green Mill Gardens began recording for Paramount Records in mid 1923. Indeed, Straight was already a veteran recording artist of over a decade, having made his first recordings with Gene Greene in the UK for Pathe Records, and having recorded again with Paul Biese’s Imperial Trio on Emerson with Biese and fellow pianist Roy Bargy. Straight is also probably the second pianist on the Saxo-Piano Fiends discs on Pathe, which aurally are the same ensemble (and arrangements and tunes) as the Emerson discs. Straight’s band was indicative of the popular white dance orchestra sound in Chicago at the time: hot, well executed, peppering in textures of the popular Biese, Benson, and Jones bands in addition to their own unique sounds. Gene Caffarelli and the trombonist (possibly Guy Carey) are a solid brass team, giving the band a strong ensemble lift.
