The nomination for World Heritage Listing of the Murujuga Cultural Landscape was led by the Murujuga Circle of Elders and Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation.
Here, some of the Elders and MAC Board Directors who worked on the nomination explain why they intend from the World Heritage Listing.
The nomination for the Murujuga Cultural Landscape covers 100,000ha of land and sea country in the Pilbara region of north Western Australia, including Dampier Archipelago, Burrup Peninsula and surrounding ocean and submerged landscapes.
The nomination, submitted to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in January 2023 for evaulation, documents how the Traditional Owners and Custodians for Murujuga, the Ngarda-Ngarli, have preserved and protected land, heritage and culture at Murujuga for more than 50,000 years, through periods of great climatic and environmental change.
