Program Notes:
Voices of Access is a piano trio inspired by the mission of the West Hartford Public Library: to foster knowledge sharing, ensure voices are heard, and promote multicultural inclusion. Lasting approximately seven and a half minutes, the work unfolds a sonic journey from “unheard
individuals to a “resonant commons,” using timbral interplay, melodic development, and rhythmic dialogue across three progressively unfolding movements to embody its core vision.

I. Unheard Voices
The piece opens with fragmented, broken melodies. Each instrument enters with irregular rhythms and disjointed registers, creating an atmosphere of uncertainty and pause. This section vividly portrays the isolation and solitude of voices that go unheard, echoing those in real life whose expressions are drowned out and left waiting for acknowledgment.
II. Gathering and Listening
The music gradually turns toward warmth and connection. Once-isolated motifs begin to imitate and respond to one another; the instruments engage in increasingly clear and intimate interaction. Melodies are extended and shared, and rhythms evolve from freedom to steadiness. This moment captures the emergence of empathy and mutual understanding within a community—a process of unfamiliar voices tentatively reaching out and drawing closer through listening.
III. The Resonant Commons
Scattered voices now coexist and co-create. Fragmented materials blend into a unified whole through resonance—not by forced uniformity, but by harmony born of attentive listening. The result is a spiritual space of openness and shared meaning—an embodiment of the work’s title, Voices of Access, and a celebration of beauty in coexistence and difference.

This work aspires to transcend barriers of race, culture, and language. It calls on us to build resonance through respect for difference, and to discover connection through listening, just as the West Hartford Public Library opens its doors to all, transmitting a timeless voice of openness, inclusion, peace, understanding, and wisdom. Through music as a bridge, may diverse voices find belonging in resonance, and may the world become a warmer place through listening and acceptance.
