Pakistan — home to the world’s largest number of UN-proscribed terrorists — has just been elected to lead global counter-terrorism efforts at the UN. Yes, the same country where Osama bin Laden was hiding for years before being eliminated by US Navy SEALs in 2011.
Now, Pakistan has been elected Vice-Chair of the UN Security Council’s Counter-Terrorism Committee, and in 2025, it will chair the Taliban Sanctions Committee.
But is this really a diplomatic win for Pakistan? Not necessarily. Here’s why: There are several counter-terrorism committees at the UNSC. All Security Council members take turns presiding over these bodies. It’s more a matter of rotation than recognition.
Denmark will chair the 1267 ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee in 2025.
Algeria will lead the 1373 Counter-Terrorism Committee. So, as long as Pakistan is on the Security Council, this kind of “privilege” might come their way. Yes, another UNSC’s disturbing irony.
