On 1st August, it was announced by The Telegraph that libraries across the country are being advised to prevent LGBT people seeing “offensive” gender-critical books, the Telegraph can reveal. Is this hypocrisy coming from the woke left? Should we censor books for the sake of 'inclusion'? And is this a double standard?

Guidance shared as “best practice” among council-run public libraries suggests measures to be more inclusive, including hosting drag queen story hours and making toilets gender neutral, partly to relieve anxiety for women with “masculine” hairstyles.

While no books are explicitly named, works such as Helen Joyce’s Trans and Kathleen Stock’s Material Girls are best-selling gender-critical titles, and Harry Potter author JK Rowling has been branded a “Terf” for her views on the trans debate.

The guidance was produced in 2022 by an Islington “LGBTIQ+ library” called Book 28, founded by Southwark Council librarian Isadore Auerbach George

The suggestion for volumes labelled “transphobic” have caused concerns about censorship, with Free Speech Union founder Toby Young warning: “I’m afraid it’s all too typical of the woke Left to urge librarians to censor books in the name of ‘inclusion’.
