Maximilian Kolbe was a Polish Catholic priest and prisoner at Auschwitz during World War II and gave his life to save another in an act of profound selflessness. In July 1941, after three inmates escaped, German guards selected ten men to die by starvation. When one of them, Franciszek Gajowniczek, pleaded for his life, Kolbe, Prisoner 16670, stepped forward and said, “I’m a Catholic priest. I have no family. Please take me instead.” He was thrown into Block 11, where he led the condemned in prayer and song for over two weeks. On August 14, 1941, he was executed by lethal injection. Kolbe’s quiet courage and faith endured beyond his death; in 1982, Pope John Paul II canonised him, honouring a sacrifice that continues to inspire.

As a dreamer in Sunday School, I was mesmerised by the stories of the Bible - David and Goliath, the Battle of Jericho and the parting of the Red Sea.
