Through the centuriate assembly, votes were weighted not by population, but by wealth and class, giving the richest citizens near-total control over elections. The poor, though numerically dominant, were placed in powerless voting blocks and often never even got to cast a meaningful vote. What looked like democracy was, in truth, an oligarchy cloaked in civic ritual. The illusion of choice pacified the masses while preserving power for Rome’s nobility. In Rome, elections weren’t about who won—they were about who was allowed to matter.
