12 July 2023, Shanghai. Half-day stroll with a Tsinghua engineering PhD—casual street shots. Route: Wujiang Road → Nanjing West Road Station → Shanghai TV Station.
Evening: dinner at a Lanzhou noodle shop near the metro station with a classmate who still works at Shanghai TV Station. Three of us, post-Tsinghua: different paths, different careers, different takes on life and society.
———
Wujiang Road—just over 200 meters, yet holding generations of Shanghai food memories.
First built around 1880, originally called Xieqiao Road—also known as Love Lane. Renamed Wujiang Road in 1943 . Early 2000s: it became a go‑to spot for nearby office workers. Yang‘s Dumplings, Tian Mi Mi, Xi Bei Lang, Hua Hua Sichuan—all part of post‑80s and post‑90s collective memory . Many Shanghainese had their first cup of milk tea here, their first boiled fish at Hua Hua, their first shengjian at Yang’s original shop .
From 2007 onward, Wujiang Road underwent several renovations. 2008: became an official pedestrian street. 2018: Sijifang renovation. Now a时尚, artsy leisure strip . Still crowded, but different from yesterday. Street stalls are history. Yet those flavors remain rooted in memory .

Nanjing West Road Station—400,000 daily passengers, a super hub.
Lines 2, 12, and 13 converge here—still a virtual transfer: exit, walk, re‑enter . Some say: “Getting lost at Nanjing West Road Station is a必修 course for every Shanghai drifter.”
In this city, you brush past tens of thousands daily—and find a certain hidden freedom. Shanghai never lacks controversy: high housing prices, pressure—everyone jokes. Yet 25 million still choose to live here. Some love the fair competition, the包容, the cultural scene—endless art exhibits, concerts.
———
Parting at the intersection: someone singing Liu Ruoying’s “Later” under the neon lights.
“Later, I finally learned how to love, but you had already gone, disappeared into the crowd…”
The song released 1999, on album I‘ll Wait for You—one of Liu’s signature pieces . Liu said it’s for those who regret: regret is human, but too much regret is pointless .
Neon lights flashing, crowds passing. The voice wasn‘t professional. But for that moment, the whole street slowed down.

Where do we begin to understand a city?
With its flavors—Yang’s Dumplings on Wujiang Road, vanished yet remembered street stalls.
With its trajectories—three Tsinghua grads, three lives, casual noodleshop talk.
With its sounds—that “Later” at the intersection, the line: “some people, once missed, are gone.”
