This is a timelapse video of the Makutta ghat road that connects Kerala (Kannur) to Karnataka (Coorg). The video starts from Koottupuzha at the Kerala border and covers the entire stretch of the ghat until Perumbadi Checkpost in Coorg (Virajpet).
There are several twists and turns in this section, while the greenery around is scenic and soothing. Driving on this route during the monsoon season is a refreshing experience. This is the shortest route that connects Coorg with the Kannur International Airport.
Makutta, along with Bhagamandala, Pullingoth, and Agumbe, features in the top 15 places in the country which receive the heaviest rainfall. The road traverses through Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary, which derives its name from the highest point, the Brahmagiri peak (1,607 m in height). It covers an area of about 181 km. The area is dense with evergreens and semi-evergreen forests, and in the higher altitudes, there are grasslands interspersed with patches of shola forests. A variety of bamboos thrive in these forests.
There is also an abundance of wildlife. Mammals in the sanctuary include lion-tailed macaque, elephant, gaur, tiger, jungle cat, leopard, wild dog, sloth bear, apart from several species of deer, squirrel, and snakes.
Traveling from Bangalore, one has to cross Gonikoppal a small town in Coorg (Kodagu) to reach the Makutta Ghats. This is a major road and the shortest route that connects Coorg with the nearest International airport in Kannur, Kerala.
Coorg, a lovely hill station, commonly known as Kodagu, is located in the Indian state of Karnataka. Coorg is known for its coffee plantations, steep slopes, numerous streams, diverse flora and fauna, lush green forests, and stunning views.
