Yuval Noah Harari, speaking on “Unholy: Two Jews on the News” with Yonit Levi and Jonathan Freedland, warns that events set in motion on 7 October 2023 could mark Judaism’s greatest turning point since the destruction of the Second Temple. If Israel stays on its current path, he says, the country may pursue ethnic cleansing in Gaza and the West Bank, dismantle its own democracy, and found a state built on Jewish supremacy, power, and violence. Such a state might flourish militarily and economically, yet it would replace two millennia of Jewish ethical tradition with a new, harsh ideology that all Jews worldwide would have to confront. Harari’s core question—“What values does Israel still stand for?”—challenges Jews everywhere to defend justice, equality, and human dignity before it is too late.
