The report was prepared together with the Rhodium Group and examines the potential costs of U.S.-China decoupling from two perspectives:

1. the aggregate costs to the U.S. economy; and
2. the industry-level costs in four industries important to the national interest (aviation, semiconductors, chemicals, and capital-intensive medical equipment).

A new administration under President Joe Biden faces a difficult challenge in defining the next stage of economic engagement with China. Continuing to shut down areas of bilateral interaction will be costly. Deciding which areas do not pose a threat to national security—and can therefore be left open—is a complex task. With this study, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce China Center seeks to illuminate the costs of decoupling for the United States and thereby help to inform policymakers, businesses, and other stakeholders to make informed decisions about serious challenges embodying difficult tradeoffs.

This report release event will provide interested stakeholders an opportunity to hear directly from the report's authors on its contents and findings, as well as from industry representatives on the topic of decoupling.
