In Orange County, it is normal to see white-tailed deer or feral hogs around neighborhoods and wandering patches of forest near town. They forage for acorns, various roots, and tubers in every county in the state. The forests that they call home consist of longleaf pine, sand pine, and saw palmetto towering over American beautyberry, Darrows blueberry, and wild blackberry bushes. Predators that prowl the subtropical forests include coyotes, bobcats, panthers, and black bears. Residents have seen black bears climbing over fences, raiding trash cans, and roaming nighttime streets. The bears had somehow included the neighborhood in their travel and foraging routes and had been accessing the streets from the nearby forest.
There had been a spate of attacks recently in Florida, and one of them ended in a human fatality. Bears were being reported across the state, but most consistently near the panhandle as bear populations from Georgia and Alabama pushed southward, expanding their range and territory.
On Friday, August 15th, 2025, twenty-something Alexander Rojas was getting ready for work in the early morning hours. His home is near Wekiwa Springs, which abuts Wekiwa Springs State Park to the north, with its 42 square miles of uninterrupted backwoods. The park is a wonderful place to hike or adventure, but is also a preferred habitat for the area's black bears.
As Alexander locked the door, he spotted two nearly grown black bears near the edge of his lawn. He had heard of neighbors spotting them here and there, but knew he didn’t want to be part of their regular visits. He had heard of the recommendations from park rangers to haze the bears away by yelling and banging items together, but their recommendations were to do so from the safety of a vehicle or an indoor location like a window. Alexander decided to do one better and stepped out onto his porch to confront the bears with very few obstacles between them.
As Alexander yelled and clapped his hands, the bears dashed through the twilight across the grass. They seemed to be taking the hazing the way he expected, until one of the bears turned and bounded directly toward him.
Alexander prepared himself as best he could to absorb the impact of the bear. He held out his forearm to protect himself, only to have the bear bite into his flesh just below his elbow. The young man pulled against the bear as it tried to drag him away from the porch. While jostling with the bear, Alexander tripped the bear and punched it in the nose, convincing the bear to release its grip on his arm.
Now painfully gashed by the bear's teeth and scratched by its claws, Alexander took the opportunity to take a running leap over a parked car. Now, modern conventional wisdom says that running from a bear can trigger a predatory instinct in the animal's behavior. It may take after a fleeing human being for nothing more than they appear to be a prey item.
But, at least in Alexander's case, the experts were proven wrong. Maybe it was his youthful vitality or perhaps it was due to a surge of adrenaline, but either way, the young man sprinted down the street away from the bears.
Now alone and in the darkness of the street, Alexander knew he needed help and dialed his most trusted source of it, his girlfriend. She listened as a panicked Alexander told her to bring towels because he was bleeding all over the street.
Alexander was rushed to the hospital, where puncture wounds and gashes on his forearm were cleaned and closed with sutures before bandaging. Doctors feared he may suffer from tendon or nerve damage in his wounded arm because he doesn’t have complete use of two of the fingers on that hand. He has been referred to a hand surgeon for follow-up despite not having health insurance.
Pictures of Alexander's wounds would not pass YouTube guidelines, so I have posted them on our Patreon account along with a link to the video of the confrontation. Let me know what you think of them when you get a chance.
For some reason, Alexander waited a few days to report the bear attack to authorities. They responded by setting out traps in the area, but the lapse in time between the attack and the reporting of it fostered doubt on whether they could find the culprits. At the time of this article, no additional information has been published regarding attempts to catch either of the bears.
As for the bear’s motive in attacking Alexander, it was likely acting in defense of a perceived threat, but may have been defending what it thought of as its feeding grounds. The bear was not protecting a cached animal carcass, nor was it defending cubs.
