Cheap Electronics Kit LED Light Bulb FAIL. I bought a cheap 38 LED lamp kit off eBay and because I hadn't read the listing properly I was surprised when it arrived without any LEDs in the kit, however it gave me an idea that I could fit Infrared LEDs and possibly use the lamp to film stuff at night so I ordered a pack of 50 IR LEDs. The assembly went smoothly but on completion it didn't work. I checked the LEDs and found the majority were dead. The only explanation I have come up with is that the back of the circuit board is not insulated and it may be possible that the LED board came in contact with AC voltage and killed most of the LEDs. If you want to see a more professional build I will put a link to one of bigclivedotcom's videos where he builds one of these and explains what each component does. UPDATE: Several people have commented that the IR LEDs have a lower forward voltage and that is probably what killed them. I was watching bigclivedotcom's video and he changed the resistor anyway as he thought the resistance was too low even for normal LEDs, I should have thought that through. The listing for the IR LEDs I purchased show Forward Voltage (V): 1.2-1.4V so they probably had a bit of a surprise :-) Whites are listed at 3 - 3.4 volts
