The auspicious festival of Navratri starting from March 22, Chaitra Navratri will be celebrated across the country with much joy, cheer and festivity. People rejoice and worship the Goddess Durga in all her glory. The festival of Navratri comes twice a year and during this time, devotees are laden with love and admiration for the Maa Durga and her 9 forms. This auspicious 9-day festival is celebrated during the months of March and April and is thus known as Chaitra Navratri.

History of Chaitra Navratri

Hindu mythology states that Chaitra Navratri signifies the creation of the universe and the beginning of the world and beings. Goddess Durga was assigned the task of creating the world and thus, this festival is also considered to be the beginning of the Hindu year by many. Another Hindu legend says that Goddess Durga visited her maternal home for nine days after her husband, Lord Shiva allowed her to go. It is said that during this time, she killed the evilest demon, Mahishasura as a symbol of good over evil. As the stories go, people worship this deity to attain inner peace, good health and strength to fight evil.

Significance and Importance of Chaitra Navratri

As mentioned earlier, the first day of Chaitra Navratri is said to be the birth of the universe. And so, it signifies the beginning of the Hindi new year. People across the country, especially North Indians rejoice in the arrival of the Chaitra Navratri by observing a fast, performing pujas and making various sweets related to this festival. Special pujas are conducted and people recite auspicious mantras to mark every avatar of Goddess Durga.
People dress up in new clothes and offer sweets to one another. Many women even chant the mantras together in the evening. The holy festival holds very special importance in the hearts of people.
