Disney Animation Songs Medley
Performed by North Korea's Moranbong Band.
North Korea's Moranbong Band(Korean: 모란봉악단) is an all-female pop music group from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, hailed as North Korea's "national treasure-level artistic troupe" and "girl group supreme." The band was personally initiated and established in July 2012 by Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un, with the aim of promoting innovation in North Korean performing arts by blending revolutionary themes with modern musical elements. Its style inherits from predecessor groups such as the Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble and the Wangjaesan Light Music Band.Key FeaturesMembers: The group consists entirely of female performers, most of whom graduated from top music institutions in Pyongyang. They are not only vocalists but also highly skilled instrumentalists proficient in various instruments (such as violin, guitar, keyboard, drums, etc.), with exceptional performance standards.Musical Style: Primarily featuring light music, electronic music, rock, and fusion styles, their songs mostly praise the leader, the Party, and the motherland (e.g., "Let's Study" and "Song of the Motherland"). However, they also adapt Western classics (such as "My Way") and Disney theme songs. Their performances are bold and innovative, often featuring short skirts, high heels, and military-style uniforms, creating a lively and fashionable stage presence. They are frequently compared by the outside world to the "North Korean version of Girls' Generation."The Moranbong Band's debut public performance took place on July 7, 2012. This concert was the band's stunning world premiere—a historic event! The performance opened with the Korean folk song "Arirang" and incorporated elements of Western pop culture: Disney characters (Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Snow White, Winnie the Pooh), the Rocky theme, and "My Way." Other Western pieces included "Csárdás," "Gypsy Melody," "Queen of Sheba," "Minuet," "Penelope," "Serenade of Stars," as well as songs labeled as "pop songs" like "Duel," "rap song" "Victory," and "country music" "Dallas." There was also a medley of music from twelve animated films titled "Famous World Fairy Tale Songs Suite."This performance propelled the Moranbong Band onto international news headlines, quickly attracting global media attention. It not only made the Moranbong Band the most popular domestic band in North Korean history but also brought so-called "North Korean pop" (NK Pop) into the global spotlight. The establishment of the band marked the rise of female fashion trends—such as miniskirts, high heels, and short hairstyles—among middle-class girls in Pyongyang, rapidly becoming a symbol of limited openness to Western culture for the younger generation in North Korea.
