We ended our holiday and began our trip home with our first flight being from Honolulu to Auckland. It was due to land in Auckland at 5:30pm on 27th January 2022. It was really bad weather but nobody expected anything other than a bit of a rough landing. Rain was streaming across the windows and we couldn’t see anything but we knew we were close to the ground as we saw the land not to far below not long before. Then the jet engines roared and we started going back up. This was when we knew something wasn’t right. Over the speaker we were told we had a missed approach and would circle around and land. We were then told that the plane which landed right before us had taken out a runway light and the runway had to be inspected. 2 more approaches which were also aborted. We were told that the plane actually took out 5 or 6 lights which needed to be repaired before we could land. The captain told us we had enough fuel to continue onto Christchurch where we would land, gas and go. But on approach to Christchurch there were 2 medical emergencies onboard which meant as soon as we land the paramedics came onboard. We sat in the plane on the tarmac for hours before being told that the runway was reopened to the smaller domestic jets but not the larger international size we were on. The pilot and crew decided we would fly back to Auckland hoping that the runaway could take us by the time we got there and if not we would again return to Christchurch. We pushed back to taxi out to the runway but after a few minutes of sitting still again the captain told us that the terminal in Auckland had flooded and closed so no flights were able to take off or land. So we then met confusion everywhere, it was chaos with nearly 2000 people trying to find accomodation. We booked a hotel room online as none were taking bookings over the phone. Mum even confirmed our booking by phone but when we went to checkin the hotel had oversold rooms.
