Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. The prostate gland is located just below the bladder and in front of the rectum. The prostate is an organ that produces fluid that becomes part of semen. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra, which is the tube that carries urine from the bladder to outside of the body through an opening called a urethral meatus. As men age, their prostate often enlarges and may cause problems with urination as well as sexual difficulties. It can cause bladder and urinary difficulties, including frequent urination, difficulty urinating, and pain in the bladder or lower abdomen. This condition usually affects older men, with an average age of 63 years.

Symptoms of prostate enlargement:

Difficulty urinating or having a weak urine stream

Needing to urinate frequently

Urinating in small amounts

A feeling that you can’t completely empty your bladder

Pain or burning during urination

Difficulty starting your urine stream or holding back urine

There are three types of prostate enlargement:

BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia)

Prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate)

Prostate cancer
