Kings and Generals historical animated documentary series on the Eastern Front of World War II continues with the largest invasion in history - Operation Barbarossa. Previously we have covered early September 1941, detailing Army Group North’s encirclement of Leningrad, Soviet attempts to hold the Volkhov line, Zhukov’s counteroffensive at Yelna, Hitler’s Directive 35, and Guderian’s troubled drive south toward Kyiv (   • Leningrad Isolated, Moscow in Hitler's Sig...  ). In this week-by-week chronicle of the Eastern Front, we cover September 8–16, 1941—when Leningrad is formally encircled and the trap around Kyiv snaps shut. We open with the Wehrmacht’s replacement crisis: staggering casualties, worn-out tanks, and Hitler’s hold on new production hampering the Panzer arm on the eve of Operation Typhoon. In the north, Army Group North seals the siege as Leeb accelerates assaults toward Krasnogvardeysky and Krasnoe Selo under heavy Soviet land and naval artillery, while massive Luftwaffe raids ignite the Badaev warehouses. Zhukov arrives, halts demolition plans, issues a no-step-back order, and throws militia and sailors into the line as a second defensive belt takes shape from the Gulf of Finland to the Neva. In the center, attritional attacks batter both sides as resources are siphoned south. There, Guderian struggles through mud until Model’s dash to Romny captures vital Soviet stockpiles; days later, Kleist breaks out of Kremenchuk, refitted divisions racing to meet Model and close the Kyiv encirclement. With Soviet command paralyzed by politics and misread intentions, the Southwestern and Bryansk Fronts stagger as German pincers converge. Exhaustion mounts, but catastrophe deepens.
