Mali: Thousands Come Together to Replaster The Great Mosque of Djenne | Firstpost Africa

Every year, thousands of people in central Mali gather to replaster the world’s largest mud-brick building, the Great Mosque of Djenne. This is not just an ordinary mosque but a structure on the UNESCO World Heritage Site. And for some years now, the mosque has been on UNESCO’s danger list. In the case of Mali, political conflicts and civil unrest pose a threat to the site. Before the rainy season, the mud building needs a new layer of mud; otherwise, it will fall. Men climb on the wall to add layers of mud, while women and children fetch water and mix clay in it. Watch our video to know more.
