𝐌𝐲 𝐊𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐬 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐈𝐬 𝐈𝐭 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬?

This is a very common question asked by patients and their loved ones. Let's explore the different types of knee pain you might have.

First, let's understand the difference between arthritic and non-arthritic pain.

𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐏𝐚𝐢𝐧
1) Arthritis is primarily the wearing down of the smooth, protective lining (cartilage) of the joint bones. This can lead to bone rubbing on bone, causing pain.
2) Main causes of arthritis:
• Osteoarthritis: This is caused by wear and tear, typically associated with aging.
• Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA): This is an autoimmune disease that attacks the joints.
• Other factors: Injuries, certain occupations, and genetics can also play a role.

1) Not all knee pain is caused by arthritis.
The knee is a complex joint with several components, let’s understand its anatomy:
• Femur: The upper thigh bone.
• Tibia: The lower leg bone.
• Meniscus: C-shaped cartilage cushions between the femur and tibia.
• Ligaments: These connect bones and provide stability.
• Patella (kneecap): Protects the front of the knee joint.
• Quadriceps: The muscle group on the front of the thigh that straightens the knee.
• Patellar tendon: Connects the quadriceps muscle to the kneecap.
2) Pain in any of these structures can cause non-arthritic knee pain.

Arthritis is less common in young people. However, here are some common causes of knee pain in this age group:
• Anterior knee pain: This pain is felt in the front of the knee and can be caused by swelling of the lining behind the kneecap (chondromalacia).
• Bursitis: Fluid-filled sacs (bursa) around the knee can become inflamed, causing pain (bursitis).
• Increased uric acid: High uric acid levels can lead to gout, which can cause knee pain.
• Ligament or meniscus injuries: These are common in young athletes due to sports injuries.

Knee pain in young people often has different causes compared to older adults. While arthritis becomes more likely as we age (typically around 50 or older), young people can still develop arthritis due to lifestyle factors or injuries.

Regardless of your age, consult an orthopedic doctor to determine the cause of your knee pain. They will consider your medical history, perform a physical examination, and may order imaging tests (X-rays, MRI) to diagnose the issue and give you a proper treatment of your knee pain.
I hope this explanation clarifies the different types of knee pain.
