Grove Street Cemetery Walk. October 27, 2025. New Haven, Connecticut.
Take a peaceful stroll with us through the historic Grove Street Cemetery in New Haven, Connecticut. This National Historic Landmark is stunningly beautiful in the autumn, with a canopy of mature trees dropping their red, orange, and gold leaves across the antique stone.
But this isn't just any picturesque resting place; it's considered the "Westminster Abbey of Connecticut" and is a true City of the Dead.
Established in 1797, Grove Street Cemetery holds several distinctions: it was the first chartered burial ground in the United States and the first to be laid out in a planned grid with family plots, complete with named avenues and cross streets—a "city" design inspired by urban planning. It was opened because the original burial ground on the New Haven Green became dangerously overcrowded after yellow fever epidemics in the late 1700s.
The cemetery’s imposing entrance gate, an iconic sight in New Haven, is a stunning example of Egyptian Revival architecture. Designed by Henry Austin in 1845, the gate famously bears the inscription, "The Dead Shall Be Raised."
The cemetery is literally bordered on all sides by Yale University buildings and has an incredibly deep, direct relationship with the school. The grounds serve as the final resting place for fourteen Yale presidents, hundreds of professors, deans, and alumni. To enter Grove Street is to walk through the history of one of America's oldest universities.
During this relaxing walk, we passed the famous graves of Noah Webster 15:39 (the lexicographer who compiled the first American dictionary) and Eli Whitney 15:01 (inventor of the cotton gin and the concept of interchangeable parts).
However, Grove Street holds many more history-makers, including:
Roger Sherman:
The only person to sign all four basic founding documents of the United States (Declaration of Independence, Articles of Association, Articles of Confederation, and the U.S. Constitution). You can see his grave in my last Grove Street Cemetery walk: • Grove Street Cemetery | New Haven, Connect...
Josiah Willard Gibbs Jr.:
The "Father of Thermodynamics" and one of the most brilliant scientists America has ever produced.
Charles Goodyear:
The inventor who gave the world vulcanized rubber. • Charles Goodyear's Grave - Inventor of Vul...
Walter Camp:
Often called the "Father of American Football" for his role in establishing the game's fundamental rules, like the line of scrimmage.
Lyman Beecher:
A famous clergyman, abolitionist, and father of Harriet Beecher Stowe.
Join us for a lovely, serene, and historically rich journey through New Haven's most remarkable landscape.
