The synchronized aerial dance of birds is often called a murmuration, particularly when it involves thousands of starlings. The behavior is a form of flocking, which helps protect the birds from predators and may also serve other communication and coordination purposes. While individual birds like the Red-Capped Manakin perform courtship dances, murmuration is a collective aerial display of a large flock.

What it is: A mesmerizing, synchronized aerial ballet performed by large flocks of birds, most famously starlings.

How it works: The birds move in perfect harmony, but the behavior is initiated by each bird following the flight path of the seven closest neighbors.

Why they do it: The main reason is predator avoidance. The large, unpredictable, and constantly shifting patterns of the flock make it extremely difficult for predators to single out and attack individual birds.

The sound: The name "murmuration" is derived from the low humming sound their wings make in flight.
