I had some people interested in checking out one of the wonderful and valuable upland swamps above the Illawarra Escarpment west of Wollongong.
The particular one we visited was in Dharawal Nature Reserve and is the headwaters for O'Hare's Creek, one of the major water courses running through Dharawal National Park.
There were plans to dam O'Hare's. In 1927 the area that is now Dharawal Nature Reserve, Dharawal State Conservation Area & Dharawal National Park was declared a 'special area'. It was to become a sixth dam, joining Avon, Cataract, Cordeaux, Nepean & Woronora on the plateau.
In 1978 these plans were abandoned, it wasn't until 1996 that the area was opened to the public and a large part became a national park, protected to the Centre of the earth in 2012.
I ventured out early and did the walk at first light, making sure I was back in time to meet the others for the group walk.
I was pleased that we got to see the vulnerable Varanus rosenbergi (Rosenberg's Goanna) & I'm 99.9% sure we were bussed by a few endangered Petalura gigantea (Giant Dragonfly).
It was impossible to positively ID, as none would stay still long enough.
