Over 150,000 people have been evacuated in Guangdong as Typhoon Matmo approached southern China, bringing fierce winds, torrential rain and high seas. More than 27,000 fishing boats in Zhanjiang, a city in Guangdong that activated a Level I typhoon response, have returned to port, and 3,000 offshore workers were brought to safety.

The storm, with sustained winds of 42 meters per second and gusts up to 16 on the Beaufort scale, makes landfall between Guangdong’s Wuchuan and Hainan’s Wenchang around midday.

Across seven coastal cities, rescue teams and over 10,000 emergency workers are on standby.. Power crews and firefighters raced to reinforce flood barriers and secure power lines.

In neighboring Hainan province, where over 110,000 were evacuated, 38 fishermen including children were rescued.

Authorities issued the highest typhoon alert, shutting schools, highways and ferry routes.

Matmo is the second major typhoon in a month, following September’s Ragasa, which forced over two million evacuations, but is moving faster.
