Описание к видео #IOHA2023

Dr. Anh Nguyen Austen sends her warm greetings from Melbourne to everyone attending the XXII International Oral History Association International Conference.

This year we will have a workshop on “Digital Diasporas: Research Methods for Public History Explorations” at #IOHA2023 — work we share Michael Frisch, Anh Nguyen Austen and Didi Santana. If you are at #IOHA2023, join us for the workshop 4, Auditorium 307, July 27, 2023, from 2-4pm at the conference venue, FGV Cultural Center.

With Anh Nguyen Austen, I am co-editing a book series on #DigitalDiaspora. The workshop is part of an exchange we started several years ago, at IOHA2016, in Bengalore, India. Here’s what you can expect from our workshop:

New digital tools, platforms, and rapidly evolving humanities/social media methods offer great promise for research, community building, and public engagement in digital diaspora. As a working group for a new series of publications about Digital Diasporas, we invite participants in workshop to explore digital methods for new interdisciplinary research, conception, and understandings of diasporas. We will present and facilitate discussion about methodological and theoretical implications of some digital methods in historical research for studying diasporic communities today.

Prof. Michael Frisch will expand upon his concept of “shared authority” in oral history with the use of digital methods including but not limited to PixStori (PixStori) for social media short-form photo-oral history documentation, Time-Code Indexing and narrative mapping of collected archival materials, and remote crowd-sourced gathering of narrative data. This presentation introduces these methods and examples of projects that opens possibilities for combined and customised applications for research, community building, and public engagement of individuals and groups that are diasporic, highly transitory, moving, or changing rapidly.

Dr. Anita Lucchesi will present her Memorecord – Memory Harvest (memorecord.uni.lu) experiment on digital public history methods based on a case study on migration memories in Luxembourg. Memorecord, a participatory project, was set up to look at the two biggest migrants’ group in the Grand Duchy – Italian and Portuguese – by crowdsourcing memories via Facebook and Instagram. The resulting collection –a digital memory platform, confronted with a series of oral history interviews and analyzed in the light of past and present migration facts in the country –proved to be strong enough to challenge successful immigration story in Luxembourg.

Dr. Dominique Santana will present her transmedia project A Colônia Luxemburguesa (colonia.lu), to show why and how interactive storytelling is an impactful dissemination tool for migration research, and an effective methodological tool to examine the polyvocal dimension of heterogeneous migrant communities. The polyvocal oral histories in dialogue with over 30 historical propaganda films from the corporate archives tells a multilayered and multi-perspective story about industrial town built from scratch called João Monlevade, and how a steel-framed migrant community forged its own microcosm surrounded by iron ore mountains in the heart of Minas Gerais’ vast mining area.
