Portland, Oregon is one of four cities in North America with volcanoes within the city limits, the others being Honolulu, Hawaii, Bend, OR, and Jackson, Mississippi. Mount Tabor was developed into a city park, and part of that development included digging an amphitheater out of the slope and exposing the ancient volcanic rocks of the interior of an extinct cinder cone. A Cinder Cone is a type of basalt volcano that erupts in a fountain of lava, which forms a big pile of lava cinders. They erupt usually only once over a period of months to years.
