SOUTH AFRICA: PRESIDENT MANDELA MEETS WITH AFRICAN LEADERS

South African president Nelson Mandela had a meeting Saturday with three other African leaders to discuss a number of regional issues.

The meeting in Pretoria was attended by Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe and the leaders of Botswana and Swaziland.

The meeting came amidst new fears that an end to violence in KwaZulu-Natal could not be found.

The meeting took place in Pretoria.

South African President Nelson Mandela hosted, Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe Swazi King Mswati III and Botswana President Ketumile Masire.

Following yesterday's inconclusive peace meeting in KwaZulu-Natal
aimed at ending the ongoing carnage in the province, President Nelson Mandela refused to be discouraged.

Mandela was jeered by hostile Zulu chiefs on Friday during a meeting of Zulu leaders which failed to set a date for a gathering of the entire Zulu nation in a bid to stop violence.

"I was happy about the outcome of the meeting because in spite of
the discontented voices one thing came out clear. People were
beginning to think and although few people apart from His Majesty
(King Zwelethini) and myself spoke about peace and unity
nevertheless I profited a great deal to know what their grievances
are behind the president and particularly against my government."

Fears are running high that more violence will follow the failed meeting in KwaZulu Natal yesterday.

A strong police presence was visible during a Inkatha march in Soweto, south of Johannesburg on Saturday.

And though this protest march over a local issue did end peacefully, many fear that more lives may be lost in the violence wracked province of KwaZulu-Natal.
