System Security Plan (SSP) & Why Its So Confusing

In this video, we're diving into the world of DFARS NIST SP 800-171 and CMMC, and revealing some of the secrets behind the often-confusing topic of System Security Plans (SSPs).

First up, let's address the massive confusion point - what's supposed to be in an SSP? We've seen defense contractors spend months documenting every aspect of their system and trying to map it to every control, which leads to a monumental workload that can crush IT departments. But that's not what an SSP is meant to be. It's not meant to be a long, detailed document that's hard to read and understand.

Another common issue we see is an SSP that's hundreds of pages long with an overwhelming level of detail. But that's not what an SSP should be either. It's supposed to be a general overview of how your system meets each compliance control in NIST SP 800-171, nothing more. Instead, you'll document what you plan to do to bring your system up to compliance in your Plan of Action with Milestones (POAM).
