Strategy - Time Management in IAS Mains (by Dr. Vikas Divyakirti)

Time management at civil services examination is a crucial component of UPSC preparation. Especially at the examination hall, time management is important. Dr. Vikas Divyakirti, in this UPSC GS Hindi lecture series, says that the basic question in students’ mind is this: How to use the 180 minutes (3 hours) in the exam hall (mains)?

Students ask whether they should read all the questions in the beginning when they get the question paper or should they keep writing the answers one by one without seeing individual questions coming later in order in the mains exam? UPSC mains students also struggle with this question: how much time should they give in each question’s answer writing (per capita time, in UPSC study lingo)? Should we give same or different amount of time to various questions in Mains exam? What should be the sequence of attempting questions in the Mains exam? Should we attempt all the questions or should we leave some questions depending on our comfort with UPSC mains questions? And lastly, what to do when we have very little time towards the end?

Note that the main problem of time management in UPSC Mains exam is in the GS (general studies, four papers)section of the examination. Note that the first 5-6 answers will really impress the examiner that you are a good candidate suitable to become an IAS or IPS officer. So this should be your first strategy in answer writing- impress the examiner and get a positive feedback about yourself. Dr. Vikas Divyakirti also gives a strategy where you can allocate time to mains questions according to what you know really well to what you know little about (give slightly more time to questions you know very well and so on). मुख्य परीक्षा में उत्तर कैसे लिखें? उत्तर-पुस्तिका की जाँच करने वाले परीक्षक को इस बात की बिल्कुल जानकारी नहीं होती कि उत्तर-पुस्तिका किस उम्मीदवार की है, उसने कितनी गंभीरता से पढ़ाई की है या उसकी परिस्थितियाँ कैसी हैं इत्यादि। परीक्षक के पास अभ्यर्थी के मूल्यांकन का एक ही आधार होता है और वह यह कि अभ्यर्थी ने अपनी उत्तर-पुस्तिका में किस स्तर के उत्तर लिखे हैं? अगर आपके उत्तर प्रभावी होंगे तो परीक्षक अच्छे अंक देने के लिये मजबूर हो जाएगा और यदि उत्तरों में दम नहीं है तो फिर आपने चाहे जितनी भी मेहनत की हो, उसका कोई सकारात्मक परिणाम नहीं निकलेगा। आपकी सफलता या विफलता में तैयारी की भूमिका 50% से अधिक नहीं है। शेष 50% भूमिका इस बात की है कि परीक्षा के तीन घंटों में आपका निष्पादन कैसा रहा? आपने कितने प्रश्नों के उत्तर लिखे? किस क्रम में लिखे, बिंदुओं में लिखे या पैरा बनाकर लिखे, रेखाचित्रों की सहायता से लिखे या उनके बिना लिखे, साफ-सुथरी हैंडराइटिंग में लिखे या अस्पष्ट हैंडराइटिंग में, उत्तरों में तथ्यों और विश्लेषण का समुचित अनुपात रखा या नहीं- ये सभी वे प्रश्न हैं जो आपकी सफलता या विफलता में कम से कम 50% भूमिका निभाते हैं। दुर्भाग्य की बात यह है कि अधिकांश उम्मीदवार इतने महत्त्वपूर्ण पक्ष के प्रति प्रायः लापरवाही बरतते हैं और उनमें से कई तो अपने कॉलेज के बाद के जीवन का पहला उत्तर मुख्य परीक्षा में ही लिखते हैं। See all videos on answer writing strategy in IAS (civil services Hindi lectures) exam by Dr. Vikas Divyakirti at    • Strategy - How to Deal With Word Limi...
